Last Sunday I ordered – for the first time – a Surface device: The Surface Pro 4. In this article I want to explain why I bought the Pro 4 and why I didn’t already buy a Surface before – even though I’ve always been tempted to buy one.
I’ve always wanted a Surface!
First, let’s talk about the most obvious reason: I have always wanted a Surface. I know this may sound a bit stupid because why wouldn’t you want to have Surface and still buy one?! Still, this very reason is quite important for my whole explanation. Because as I mentioned above, the Surface Pro 4 is the first Surface I actually bought. Hence, there had to be a reason why in the end I always decided against buying the specific Surface. And if I really think about it, it has always been one single reason why I didn’t spent my money on a Surface: I never was completely sure if this really is the device I need (despite wanting one).
If you spend so much money, you really have to actually have a need for the device!
And if you spend so much money on one device you really have to be sure about that aspect. To be fair, there were once some pretty good deals on the Surface 2 and especially Surface RT. But considering the recent situation of those, I’m actually very glad I didn’t buy one. When Microsoft launched the Surface Pro 3 I said to myself: “Wow, this device is just so exciting! This will be the Surface I’ll definitely buy!”. I really was very close to buying one but since I needed a new laptop more or less immediately for school I – once again – did not buy the Surface Pro 3 because here in Switzerland we had to wait a bit longer till the release. But now, one and a half years later, I ultimately fulfilled my wish and bought the Surface Pro 4 (Core i5, 4 GB). And I already love it!
Now here are the reasons why Surface Pro 4 convinced me to spend my money on a Surface.
#Windows10Devices – Surface Pro 4 impressed me
At the #Windows10devices event I got my first hands on with the Surface Pro 4. I also got my hands on the new Lumia flagship devices 950 and 950 XL but while I was just more or less impressed with those, the Pro 4 really triggered my desire to buy one. And that wasn’t the case with the two Lumias.
Surface Pro 4 has so many things to love!
Anyway, back to the topic. Surface Pro 4 just has so much things to love: The sharp and beautiful-looking screen, the fast Windows Hello login and the improved input devices like the new Type Cover. Once again I saw myself confronted with the same decision: Whether to buy or not to buy the Surface Pro 4.
Surface Pro 3 won me over…
Shortly after the #Windows10devices event I got – thanks to kind Monika Staubli from Microsoft – the chance to try out a Surface Pro 3 for about two weeks (Yes, there will be a review on this site very soon! Promised!) and I was absolutely blown away by the flexibility, productivity and portability of the device. I just had such a great experience with the Surface Pro 3 and I was very sad when I had to send it back to Microsoft. Now it was quite clear for me, that I will buy a Surface… Sometime…
Wanted Core M3 – Bought i5
As I mentioned before I bought myself the Core i5 model with 4 GB of RAM and 128 GB of storage. Actually, I always intended to go with the Core M3 version. Not only because it is the cheapest way to get the Pro 4 experience (although I have to agree that this would have been the main reason) but also because it is the only model without a fan.
And then I saw a really good deal for the Core i5 version: Thanks to a special offer the price has been reduced for a short period of time to just 899 CHF (about $ 905) while at most retailers you had to pay 950 CHF for the Core M3 version. Logically, I did spend my money on the Core i5 model… And I haven’t regret it so far since I’ve never heard the fan as of now (except when updating the device to the November update)!
Perfect for note-taking
When I had the Surface Pro 3 here to test out I always brought it to school because it’s just so convenient to take all your notes with the Surface. Thanks to OneNote synchronization you never have to worry about forgetting or even losing your notes and you’ve got them always with you: On your desktop, on your notebook, on your tablet, on your Surface and on your mobile phone. When I write on paper I always have to worry about losing one of the notes and sometimes I really could go crazy when I just see huge pile of paper.
This all makes Surface to a unbelievably useful tool for school and I can’t wait to take my Surface Pro 4 to school in about two weeks time!
