Last week, I had the chance to attend the #WINsiders4Good event in Cologne. The topic of the event was “Games for Good”. Members of Dona Sarkars Team explained us what the goal of the event was. The participants should develop creative ideas how games could be used for solving real world problems. In just two and half days, all groups came up with incredible creative and useful ideas and most of them were already working on bringing their ideas to life.
My group for example worked on the project “H2O priority”. Our goal was to raise the awareness about hand hygiene to prevent spreading infections. For instance, people should be reminded to wash their hands for after opening a door or after entering a restaurant.
The next big question was “How can we find out whether people wash their hands or not?” The answer is quite simple: Many people are using smartwatches like the Microsoft Band. All these devices have many integrated sensors. With one of these sensors it is possible to detect several hand moves so that our game can notice when people are washing their hands. The players are getting rewarded for being hygienic with coins and trophies.
In just two days, we were able to develop a first prototype of the game and we will continue working on it in the future.
All groups were working really hard during the two days we had. Nevertheless, there was still enough time to get in touch with each other, to discuss and share different project ideas and of course to eat;)
One of my highlights of the event was definitely the little HoloLens demo and presentation from Insiders to Insiders especially because everyone had the chance to play around a bit with the device;)
The presentation of the results of each groups marked the end of the event. All groups presented interesting solutions to different problems. One group developed a game to reduce traffic jams, an other one a game to make people more healthy, productive and social. All in all, every group came up with great ideas and results I had never expected to see after such a short time.
After a group photo and a little snack, everybody went home with a really cool and unique NinjaCat shirt. To sum up, the WINsiders4good event in Cologne has been a really cool and inspiring event with a lot of fun!
