Microsoft is one of the leading cloud service providers and benefits a lot from the rise of the cloud technology. The company owns several datacenters worldwide. Already today, over 44% of the electricity consumed by Microsoft’s datacenters comes from wind, solar and hydropower. Until 2020, over 60% of the consumed energy should come from clean energy.
Today, Microsoft announced the purchase of 237 megawatts of wind energy which will allow the datacenter in Cheyenne in Wyoming to be powered completely by wind power. This purchase increases Microsoft’s total purchases of wind energy in the U.S. to more than 500 megawatts.
A cloud which combines innovation and sustainability is definitely a good vision – not just for Microsoft. At least in my opinion, the cloud offers many opportunities and is a good tool to empower people all over the world. Therefore, I am really happy that Microsoft is investing in clean energy to power its datacenters. What are your thoughts on the investments in wind energy? Tell us in the comments!
