A couple of months ago, Microsoft launched a special version of the Surface Type Cover, the Surface Signature Type Cover. This Type Cover is covered in luxurious Alcantara materiel and is an intersection of design, fashion and technology.
Today, I had the chance to try out the Surface Signature Type Cover. In this article I want to share my first impressions on this special accessory with you.
Look and Feel
The Surface Signature Type Cover looks and feels great! I really like its two-tone grey mélange color which gives the entire keyboard a luxurious look. Furthermore, the color of the Signature Type Cover perfectly matches the magnesium coloring of all Surface devices. A Surface Pro 4 with the Signature Type Cover looks fashionable and professional at the same time.
I love my Surface Type Cover but the Signature Type Cover really does feel significantly better. The Alcantara fabric provides a luxurious soft feeling while touching it.
Luxurious Touch and Feel – But what else?
The Signature Type Cover has the same functions as a regular Type Cover and offers a similar typing experience. Like all other Type Covers it has backlit keys, a big trackpad and a function key row – so nothing new here. The Signature Type Cover does not have a fingerprint reader.
So would I buy it?
The Signature Type Cover is definitely the most luxurious and stylish Type Cover Microsoft has ever created. The design is great especially for people who are professionals and want a fashionable accessory for their Surface. Don’t get me wrong – the other Surface Type Covers especially the colorful ones are really cool too, but if you are a professional you might not want to use a red or blue cover.
The regular Type Covers cost $129.99. The Signature Type Cover is available for $30 more. It costs $159.99 which is at least in my opinion a fair price. Yes, it is expensive but when you compare it to competing keyboards like the Apple Smart Keyboard for iPad Pro which actually costs $169.99, the price is understandable – Surface devices are high-end devices and high-end devices cost money.
The Surface Signature Type Cover works with Surface Pro 4 and Surface Pro 3. Should people who already own a Surface Pro 4 Type Cover buy the Signature Type Cover? No – the original Type Cover offers a great experience. And spending $159.99 just for design… At least I would not do this. Nevertheless, if you don’t own a Type Cover already you should at least think about spending $30 more for a more stylish and luxurious Type Cover. I can definitely recommend the Signature Type Cover to all people who love design, fashion and Surface products.
Now, I would like to hear your opinion on the Signature Type Cover. Tell us in the comments what you think!
