While Windows 8 had OneDrive Placeholders, Microsoft removed this feature from Windows 10. Many users are missing this feature but they can be happy now: The OneDrive Placeholders are returning! The feature now has the name OneDrive Files On Demand and lets users see their data stored on OneDrive without having it stored locally on their device.
A new status icon in the File Explorer will show if your files are stored locally or just online on OneDrive. You will get the option to always keep selected files on your device. Just right-click on the selected file and mark “Always keep on this device”.
This new/old OneDrive feature will arrive this Fall with the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update. According to Microsoft, Insiders on the Fat Ring will already see this new feature “early this summer”.
