Since yesterday the 15-inch version of the Surface Book 2 is available in Germany (and in other markets too.)
I took a look at the latest member of the Surface family and will share my first impressions on the bigger Surface Book 2 in this article. In November, I already wrote about my impressions on the 13.5-inch version of the Surface Book 2. You can find the article here.
The Surface Book 2 looks and feels similar to the original Surface Book. The 15-inch version is simply a bigger Surface Book which is actually not a bad thing. I am huge fan of the look and feel of the aluminum body of the device.
While the 15-inch version is full of power it is actually quite light. Especially the 15-inch tablet part is very light when detached from its base. The standalone tablet is big and it will take its time to get use to holding a 15-inch screen in the hands. Nevertheless, creatives should enjoy working with the Surface Pen and the Surface Dial on this huge tablet screen. Looking on the screen with a resolution of 3240×2160 pixels just makes fun. Colors look awesome on the device and I really have to say that I am in love with the displays of both the 13- and the 15-inch versions of the Surface Book 2.
By increasing the size of the screen, Microsoft also had more space for the keyboard. Sadly, this extra space hasn’t been used. The trackpad hasn’t been increased in size and is not as big as the one on the 15-inch MacBook Pro. I am a bit disappointed to see all the empty space on all sides of the keyboard. Microsoft should have increased the size of the trackpad or added more keys to use the extra space.
While this is of course something Microsoft should improve the keyboard itself is amazing. Typing on the Surface Book 2 is a pleasure and it offers me one of the best typing experiences I can think of.
Of course I was not able to test the performance and the battery life of the device. From my first impressions I can definitely say that the 15-inch Surface Book 2 is an impressive piece of hardware. Especially the display is excellent. Additionally it offers a good typing experience. I can only criticize that Microsoft hasn’t used the extra space next to the keyboard. It would have been great to get a bigger touchpad or additional keys. I hope Microsoft will find a better usage for the empty space with the next generation of Surface Book.
Summing up, the bigger Surface Book 2 is a device that offers a tremendous amount of features and is basically capable of everything.
