During Microsoft’s Windows 10 Devices event in Zurich, I also was able to hold the Lumia 550 and to take some pictures of the Windows 10 Mobile low-end device. As the title already indicates, I only spent a very limited time with the phone. Not only was I more interested in the high-end flagships Lumia 950 and Lumia 950 XL, but also was the Lumia 550 not set up (and when I wanted to set up the device, one of the few 950’s was lying around so I picked that one up 😉 ). Nevertheless, here are my thoughts and impressions.
Design & Build Quality
The Lumia 550 looks quite similar to other current Lumia low-end phones with one noticeable change: On the back there’s now the same Microsoft Logo as on the Lumia 950 (XL) and many Surface devices. The black version felt quite nice, while I’m not the biggest fan of the white version, which was due to the fact that it has a glossy back covered with fingerprints. That’s pretty much everything I can tell about the phone regarding design and build quality.
As mentioned before, the Lumia 550 wasn’t set up and that’s why I couldn’t take a look at many things on the phone. I was able though to take a look at the display – although just at the setup process. As expected, the display isn’t the sharpest one but it seemed to be of acceptable quality overall for the targeted price point.
Speaker, Battery Life, Software, Performance
I could not test those aspects for obvious reasons… 😉
It should be pretty clear, that those few impressions aren’t enough to make a final conclusion. Valentin already thought about if the Lumia 550 even does make sense given the fact that there are similar Lumia phones out there right now. Of course, specs-wise it doesn’t really make sense to have the Lumia 550 in the line-up. Still, I think it’s great to see a budget phone running Windows 10 Mobile out of the box. I hope I will get a review unit of it to have some better ideas about the phone.
